Enable SharePoint auditing for opening and viewing documents
Please make this feature available for SharePoint Online.
"For SharePoint Online, the Opening or downloading documents, viewing items in lists, or viewing item properties event is not available."
For tenant admins and compliance officers, SharePoint audit of document activity is available in the compliance center, see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/securitycompliance/search-the-audit-log-in-security-and-compliance.
For site users, we have anonymized usage data available now. The modern site usage page (siteanalytics.aspx) shows both files with most total views and most unique users who viewed. We have also added a hover card experience in doc libraries, which will show total number of views for that document.
We are not planning any updates at this time to the classic site collection auditing features.
If there are additional specific features you’d like to see, please open a new userVoice request.

Any update on this?
Could you please provide an update on this? I have many customers using teams and groups asking about this feature. They currently only see the number of views and a generic message "We can't show who viewed this item yet". Knowing who is viewing files would greatly help with O365 adoption as it would provide an easy tool for monitoring access and file usage.
Same question, is there any updates on it?
As a user (not admin), I would like to notify when you look at the details of a document for SharePoint Online, you can see how many views there are. Next to that, there is a little (i) icon to the right is for information. Hover over it and it shows "We can't show you who viewed this item yet.". So that can be confused. Does this "i" button will be really available in the future to let people see who have viewed the specific document?
If so, how long do you think that will be implemented? Thanks.
Can you please let us know how to enable this feature?
Any update on getting List Item and Doc views audit available for SP Online sites?
Auditing can be enabled at the site collection level in SharePoint Online as a site collection feature and settings. This does not include Read auditing. You can also open the O365 Admin Center, Select Security & Compliance, select Search & investigation and the Audit log search. You can find some things in Site Collection auditing that are not in the Security & Compliance (e.g. changes to SP groups). You should be able to view read activity in Audit Log search but the Interface is obtuse and it will take practice. I contacted MS Premier support and we learned together.

I have enabled preview features mode but still cannot see this. Please can you tell me how this can be enabled and when it will be a full feature?
