Lookup on lists over 5,000
Lookup Columns that go to a list that contains more than 5000 items does not work even if that list is indexed. Indexing allows users to see items in the list in a normal view, but when trying to do a lookup to that list from another site or library, there is no filtering applied. It would be nice if some filtering could be applied to the lookup feature to help narrow the results shown in the lookup.

Wow, it is 2020, so 4 years since this suggestion was created. And it is still impossible to create a Lookup Column, based on a >5k List.
I tried to build a workaround with PowerApps Form customization on SPO, but it still does not work as expected. -

It is simply astonishing that this pivotal functionality is missing. This is an absolute deal-breaker for our customers. "No, you simply can't have more than 5000 suppliers/customers/whatever" is totally unacceptable.

Make large list queries by indexed lookup fields (user fields too) work by lookup value, not only ID

Thanks for your feedback! I'm just moving your idea to the Lists forum. There are several other ideas related to Lookup columns there, so your idea will get more attention in that forum.

+1 To Brian Mair's comment:
This is my #1 show-stopper when it comes to building real-life application solutions with SharePoint Online. -

The 5000 limit is to small, it should be min 10 000 or more.

This is my #1 show-stopper when it comes to building real-life application solutions with SharePoint Online. I understand the rational behind the LVT, and appreciate the workarounds provided such as the use of indexed columns with filtered list views, but the same workarounds should be available with lookup columns that would also work well with a filtered list of items. A people-picker style selection method would surely enable smart queries on the data.
