Enable renaming the SPO tenant domain
Currently the site collection URLs are fixed as https://tenant.sharepoint.com and cannot be changed. This does not fit with flexible cloud-based solutions - business needs will inevitably result in an organisation changing it's name during its lifetime (mergers, acquisitions, rebranding etc). While it may not be possible to change it so that entirely custom domains are used (eg contoso.com, instead of sharepoint.com), it must be possible to allow the sub-domain to be changed (eg. newtenant.sharepoint.com)? Please?
Migrating an entire organisation (likely to include Exchange, Skype, Sharepoint and Onedrive data!!) to a new Tenancy is absolutely not a viable option.

We are continuing to validate this long-awaited feature in a Private Preview Program with a subset of customers. Although feedback has been very positive we have identified a few things that we still need to address before we start making this more generally available. We appreciate that this is taking time, however providing a consistent user experience across M365 that continues to function as expected is a complex problem. We will provide another update within the next few months.

we are waiting for this option to migrate data to sharepoint, without this we need too many different accounts and it s much easier if we just have one admin account

They really should have just gone with a random alpha numeric for the name.onmicrosoft.com and this would never have been an issue

What is the expected time-scale for a public preview, please? How is the project tracking at? 10%, 50%, 90% completion? Where is it stuck at? I have several tenants to rename, please.

Just to ring in with my own post on this. Companies change their names every day for reasons like: Acquisitions', Splits, Sell Offs, New Company Start Ups where the company name is not finalized, or other legal reasons. This should not be a big issue for Microsoft to fix and I am surprised that they have not fixed it years ago

This is totally unbelievable... A tenant name that cannot be changed! For a product that is build for millions to use and we all live under the same single and unchangeable domain of sharepoint.com? Is this true? This must be a misunderstanding!

I am like all 730 other commenters where I was flabbergasted when I found out that it is not possible to change our tenant name. All of our OneDrive links are in the form testCompanyName.onmicrosoft.com, because I was under the impression that once I ported over our purchased domain name that it would be able to use that. It is ridiculous that Microsoft did not configure this to (a) use custom domains and (b) rename the tenant domain.

I am still hopeful that this will be fixed soon. Maybe early next year we can finally fix a mistake that was made before my time at my current employer.

While I don't think this is a quick or easy change to make technically, I do think that providing updates is quick and easy. Please provide more info on the status of your private preview. If you can't give us the software change we badly need, at least do something to make us feel noticed.
