Enable renaming the SPO tenant domain
Currently the site collection URLs are fixed as https://tenant.sharepoint.com and cannot be changed. This does not fit with flexible cloud-based solutions - business needs will inevitably result in an organisation changing it's name during its lifetime (mergers, acquisitions, rebranding etc). While it may not be possible to change it so that entirely custom domains are used (eg contoso.com, instead of sharepoint.com), it must be possible to allow the sub-domain to be changed (eg. newtenant.sharepoint.com)? Please?
Migrating an entire organisation (likely to include Exchange, Skype, Sharepoint and Onedrive data!!) to a new Tenancy is absolutely not a viable option.
Thanks for your feedback! Just a note to let you know that we’re building your suggestion now. We plan to increase availability to this feature as we continue improving the tech, and ensuring a smooth experience across Office 365 following the URL changes in SharePoint Online.

can we have multiple managed paths in SharePoint online to differentiate between site collections as we have in on premises?

The new changing of site collection name however breaks the link of Office 365 group-connected team sites with the files tab in teams. I really need this to be fixed so that i can utilize the new function.
We can now change site collection names but what about tenant names? Is this coming soon? We are about to start a project where we will build our intranet with SharePoint however we would want our tenant name to be changed before hand as it was initially set-up as test and has remained that way there fore our url's don't represent the organisation.

Thanks for posting the update - I hadn't meant my comment to sound like I was criticising you. I was (and still am!) exasperated by Microsoft's tardiness and the paucity of what they are proposing to implement.

I agree the original request was for tenant rename but just wanted to pass along the most recent information I had. As a consultant, I too need the tenant rename for clients of mine who mistakenly typed their tenant name or have changed names since the tenant was created.

I read on a tweet somewhere that this was one of the topics being discussed at Ignite this year (nov 2019). I'll try dig it out, I have been waiting for this for YEARS!

The URL renaming is a bit clunky. It became available in our tenant last Thursday -- I changed a URL name /sites/ITChamps > /sites/team-itchampions. The issue is all it's doing is overlaying a redirect (that I suspect will never go away?) -- so I can never again create another site with the URL /sites/ITChamps. Was this the plan all along? Previously I would create a new site, and migrate content from the old site to the new site. Can you provide an option NOT to redirect? It would be most beneficial to be able to actually use the URL once again, after it's been changed.

Changing the URLs of Site Collections in NOT what was being asked for!!!
I work for ABC Co. Our O365 tenancy is ABC.sharepoint.com We have been re-branded to XYZ Co. I need to be able to change the TENANCY to XYZ.sharepoint.com
This should not still be on the "I suggest you..." list after three years.

I received an email update that this is rolling out to be completed by end of October
New Feature: SharePoint Site URL Rename
We’re making it possible for SharePoint administrators to change site URLs.
• We'll be gradually rolling this out to customers in mid-October.
• The roll out will be completed worldwide by the end of October.
This roll out does not apply to Office 365 subscriptions for EDU tenants.
This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 56205.
How does this affect me?
As a global or SharePoint admin in your organization, you will be able to change the URL for the following types of sites (previously called "site collections"):
• Classic team sites
• Communication sites
• Modern team sites that don't belong to an Office 365 group
• Office 365 group-connected team sites
For example, if you have a site named https://contoso.sharepoint.com/sites/Develpment, you can rename the site to correct the incorrect spelling of "development" via the SharePoint admin center.
Automatically-generated redirects will ensure that old links do not break.
It would be very nice if entirely custom domains could be used (eg ms.contoso.com, instead of contoso.sharepoint.com
I suspect any news now has to wait for November to make a big splash at Ignite, rather than solving our problems now if/when the solution is ready.
Was thinking of moving over from dropbox but when I noticed I could only use my old company name I decided to stick where I was. Even a garbled url that means nothing would have been better than being stuck with a company name that no longer exists. Don't hold much hope for this update seeing as no updates at all since March.
Any news to this feature? Re branding isn't a new thing. It would really help if we can have a timeline for this update since a lot of users in our organization are questioning us about the links and sites being shared to them.
Hi Matt - Any updates on this feature?
Will this work for changing upper case to lower case only?
Currently all is supported is to migrate to a new tenant. But this would require a whole new project and a lot of work. Why is it to "easy" to rename a web application or to use an alternative url (with an AAM for example) on on-premise and what makes it so difficult to implement such a functionality in SPO? I mean... This request is the most requested and open sind Mrc 2016!

We created a sharepoint tenant when were thinking of a brand name to collaborate and to store documents.
Now that we have a company name and a trademark, its appalling to know that we cant change the primary URL to show the company or brand name.
There should be an option that an admin should be able to change the main tenant url for sharepoint.
