Enable renaming the SPO tenant domain
Currently the site collection URLs are fixed as https://tenant.sharepoint.com and cannot be changed. This does not fit with flexible cloud-based solutions - business needs will inevitably result in an organisation changing it's name during its lifetime (mergers, acquisitions, rebranding etc). While it may not be possible to change it so that entirely custom domains are used (eg contoso.com, instead of sharepoint.com), it must be possible to allow the sub-domain to be changed (eg. newtenant.sharepoint.com)? Please?
Migrating an entire organisation (likely to include Exchange, Skype, Sharepoint and Onedrive data!!) to a new Tenancy is absolutely not a viable option.
Thanks for your feedback! Just a note to let you know that we’re building your suggestion now. We plan to increase availability to this feature as we continue improving the tech, and ensuring a smooth experience across Office 365 following the URL changes in SharePoint Online.

Matthew, is there any chance for an ETA on this ... this is a post of DESPERATION!
I think Microsoft should consider upping the priority for this request as now a days we see more companies being split or merged. Thank you.
I am at wits end on this. When is Microsoft going to allow this?
When is Microsoft going to fix this?
100% required for our business to continue using Microsoft services.
What is the due date for the completion of this? Thank you.

Hi when is this due for completion?
We changed our business name over a year ago now and we are still sending clients links to our old company name. This looks really amateur and confusing!
What is the current status on this????

Absolutely required. Would be good to know when this is implemented. We changed our business name last week, and now cannot line up our SharePoint tenant name in line with our brand. The likes of Atlassian allow us to do this, so would be great for Microsoft to get up to speed.

What is the actual time frame for this? Is this already on the roadmap?

When we first registrered for Office 365 we had NOT settled on the final name for our company. Now 1 year later following a name search and evaluation process we have selected the final name, but can't change the tenant name. ugh... it is too cumbersome and risky to migrate to a new subscription just to change the tenant name, so we will be awaiting this functionality with much excitement.

Any update on this issue?
"Teams (for Office 365 group-connected sites)
After the site address is changed, users won't be able to view the team's files within the Teams app, but they can access them from Teams by selecting Open in SharePoint. This issue is actively being worked on and will be addressed soon."
I have attempted to change the URL for a group connected team and this is causing a lot of user frustration.
I really wish I knew about this issue BEFORE I changed the SharePoint URL, especially seeing as there is no possible rollback....

The most frustrating part of this is Microsoft's response seems to have completely missed the point Dan was making and instead of taking ownership of the actual issue, they've sugar coated a different solution to a different problem (renaming site URLs) instead of addressing the tenant renaming issue.
Nearly a 4 year old post and no progress or information! This post has nearly 9k votes:
Not a peep. At least not renaming a tenant.

Any update from Ignite on this?

When oh when this will be available? This feature is so looong overdue that we just can't wait to get rid of our deprecated tenant names that was made permanent by your bad design. We know, that you know that this is a real pain in the neck for so many clients of yours and it's so weird to me that you haven't fixed it yet.

We have bough a company who had sharepoint already and got information from Microsoft that its ok we could change the domain later on to our official name. However we still have to use old obsolete domain name obsolete.sharepoint.com because it cannot be changed. This is not good. Making a new sharepoint instance and copying all data to it is now too tedious operation. When this change will be possible?

can we have multiple managed paths in SharePoint online to differentiate between site collections as we have in on premises?

The new changing of site collection name however breaks the link of Office 365 group-connected team sites with the files tab in teams. I really need this to be fixed so that i can utilize the new function.
We can now change site collection names but what about tenant names? Is this coming soon? We are about to start a project where we will build our intranet with SharePoint however we would want our tenant name to be changed before hand as it was initially set-up as test and has remained that way there fore our url's don't represent the organisation.

Thanks for posting the update - I hadn't meant my comment to sound like I was criticising you. I was (and still am!) exasperated by Microsoft's tardiness and the paucity of what they are proposing to implement.
