Enable renaming the SPO tenant domain
Currently the site collection URLs are fixed as https://tenant.sharepoint.com and cannot be changed. This does not fit with flexible cloud-based solutions - business needs will inevitably result in an organisation changing it's name during its lifetime (mergers, acquisitions, rebranding etc). While it may not be possible to change it so that entirely custom domains are used (eg contoso.com, instead of sharepoint.com), it must be possible to allow the sub-domain to be changed (eg. newtenant.sharepoint.com)? Please?
Migrating an entire organisation (likely to include Exchange, Skype, Sharepoint and Onedrive data!!) to a new Tenancy is absolutely not a viable option.

We are continuing to validate this long-awaited feature in a Private Preview Program with a subset of customers. Although feedback has been very positive we have identified a few things that we still need to address before we start making this more generally available. We appreciate that this is taking time, however providing a consistent user experience across M365 that continues to function as expected is a complex problem. We will provide another update within the next few months.

This would be a great feature! I'm struggling with the same issue.

As a Microsoft Cloud partner and answerable to Microsoft users, we are trying to get a sense on any updates on this feature rollout.
We understand giving an exact date may be tricky, but it is always good to have a sense of the potential month or quarter this could be in.
If we can get an idea on the results of the private preview, that would be helpful too.
Looking forward. -

This is an oddly missing capability in the year 2020. For us this is critical as we have recently rebranded and wish to utilize our SharePoint with a new tenant name. Many other companies have done, are doing or will do the same.
Like others we'd like to know the ETA...is this weeks, months or years away from being a reality.

Keen to see this released as well.
I have a new M365 tenant who literally started with one domain to get up and running and rebranded within weeks, so would be great to not be locked into the original domain.
They don't even have any Sharepoint sites setup either, nor do they want to under the old original "temp" domain.
Is there an ETA on this reaching GA?

@Ian, That sounds great! Anyway I can enable the private preview or is it something I would have had to opt into a while ago?

@Robert - happy to share! @Sam - correct, rename of tenant URL is in-place - content is not moved. I don't think you can ever leave behind your first URL, but for day-to-day use, all contoso.sharepoint.com are now fabrikam.sharepoint.com. Some small things break, but most can be fixed by re-publishing, re-linking, re-indexing or similar actions.

@Ian Caldwell - probably the best news we've had since February this year :)
Sure Microsoft can't fix the global pandemic but they "might" be able to finally fix this one haha

I have a very small, very young tenant I would love to get moved.

Hi Ian Caldwell,
So you were able to change the SharePoint URL without migrating to a new Tenant?

Ian Caldwell commented
We did this change last Friday as part of the private preview - so nice to have our new SharePoint URL :-) So it is real and coming soon. The change has to update all sites - which includes every user with a onedrive - and MRUs. So far so good.

I can't believe that it takes so long for an update on this. As an early Azure user, my tenant was auto-provisioned and it's name contains part of my email address and domain name. If, when I took out the 365 subscription, I'd been given an option of creating a new tenant I would have done so and life would be simple! However, now I'm stuck with this stupid name and no chance of changing it.

@Sharepoint UserVoice Admin - Thank you for the update on Sep 8th 2020! It's been way too long between updates on this. Hope that "another update in the next few months" holds true as this is a greatly needed feature and more communication on where this stands is needed.

Can't find anything regarding domain renames on the official Microsoft SharePoint roadmap????
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=SharePoint&searchterms=domain
Any chance you'd know when this is going to be added?

Dragon, where did they say to do this?
So if it was a new tenant, this would be possible? -

Update please

The 'solution' Microsoft gave me is to migrate everything to a new tenant. I need to use a third-party tool as Microsoft do not provide one.

WOW....raised four years ago and it's still an issue.
@matthew.carlson do you have an update on timing?
