Enable renaming the SPO tenant domain
Currently the site collection URLs are fixed as https://tenant.sharepoint.com and cannot be changed. This does not fit with flexible cloud-based solutions - business needs will inevitably result in an organisation changing it's name during its lifetime (mergers, acquisitions, rebranding etc). While it may not be possible to change it so that entirely custom domains are used (eg contoso.com, instead of sharepoint.com), it must be possible to allow the sub-domain to be changed (eg. newtenant.sharepoint.com)? Please?
Migrating an entire organisation (likely to include Exchange, Skype, Sharepoint and Onedrive data!!) to a new Tenancy is absolutely not a viable option.
Providing a consistent user experience across M365 that continues to function as expected is a very complex problem which we have been validating in a Private Preview Program.
The good news is that we are once again able to accept additional nominations into the Private Preview. If you would like to nominate yourself you can do so at https://aka.ms/SPOTenantRenameNomination. Please note that a nomination does not necessarily mean that you will be accepted. We are reviewing these on a case by case basis and will only be in contact if accepted.

@Microsoft, Any update? It has been a few months ...
Despite what one would assume with the Powershell commands name the Start-SPOTenantRename renames the site not the tenant as desired.
Seems mad that we still cant do this after so many years.
Tenant to Tenant migrations are getting ever more complex now with Teams, Stream etc involved and as a school the cost is getting unviable if we wanted to move everything we need across to a new tenant.
Would happily take part in the previews if it meant we could get it done without migrating.
This rename feature of the root site name is really a MUST-Have. Our company changed its name and still our sharepoint has the old company's name...
hello, there is a way to get MS attention and make the SharePoint tenant rename , engage with your MS rep , contact support escalation group in CTS SharePoint and O365 Support
Not sure if this guys is still around but he helped us with our tenant rename
I have 0 faith that Microsoft will ever fix this issue. I can't imagine how a public web service does not allow users to use their own domain or change the name of their site. I guess Microsoft would never know that small business have a need to change names at times, especially with accusations. Anyway, I've noticed Microsoft is switching away from using "User Voice" in their other forums, so sadly I expect this request will simply get deleted soon. The rename Office 365 tenant was the number 1 requested feature on Office 365 user voice for the last 5 years with thousands of requests, but since that user voice is closed, there is no way to check if that fix that was "coming soon" will ever be available. :(
This was opened 5 years ago. For reference, March 30, 2016 was the same day Microsoft starting shipping the first Hololens to developers. What are the odds we can get this implemented before the Hololens 3 is released? To be honest, my money is on the Hololens team.
Much needed for us also! Management does not like to see old company name referenced, and it's preventing us from using Sharepoint to it's fullest.
Hello! Please provide an update to this popular request. The last update was December of last year. As seen in various comments, there have been plenty of test users that have had success with the rename.

We would like to see this feature added as our company goes through a rebranding. Will follow for updates. Thanks!

Also here we waiting for this improve. come on guys :D
Can someone share here an ETA?
Companies change their name. Looks unprofessional being stuck with old references such as the original name when signing up to MS
This is a big-time must-have feature in my opinion. We just did a name change at our office and it doesn't look very professional that our SharePoint sites still show our old company name in the web address.
Any update on this?
This is a must have in my opinion.
Can you make this happen. can you give us your timeline?

Adding my voice to this one; it would be great to even be able to have an alternative domain in addition to the existing.
Over the years we have changed our brand name but there is no way to change the name on the SharePoint domain. This is creating lots of confusion with our clients and employees, please help
