Enable renaming the SPO tenant domain
Currently the site collection URLs are fixed as https://tenant.sharepoint.com and cannot be changed. This does not fit with flexible cloud-based solutions - business needs will inevitably result in an organisation changing it's name during its lifetime (mergers, acquisitions, rebranding etc). While it may not be possible to change it so that entirely custom domains are used (eg contoso.com, instead of sharepoint.com), it must be possible to allow the sub-domain to be changed (eg. newtenant.sharepoint.com)? Please?
Migrating an entire organisation (likely to include Exchange, Skype, Sharepoint and Onedrive data!!) to a new Tenancy is absolutely not a viable option.
Thanks for your feedback! Just a note to let you know that we’re building your suggestion now. We plan to increase availability to this feature as we continue improving the tech, and ensuring a smooth experience across Office 365 following the URL changes in SharePoint Online.
Can you clarify if the plan is to allow you to change the tenant name, like in the example provided in the original post (https://tenant.sharepoint.com) or is it like what is described in the roadmap, where you can change other names in the URL structure? (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=&searchterms=Sharepoint%2CURL)
Also, when will it be live?
is there any eta for this feature? my business is merging with another business and we want to use an existing tenant as there is a large number of integration's within that tenant we dont want to lose. Being able to rename the SPO tenant domain would be extremely useful.
My company is also suffering from the inability to change our sharepoint domain from blah.sharepoint.com to somethingelse.sharepoint.com.
We are eagerly waiting for you to implement this feature.
Hi, was wondering if this will be implemented anytime soon? and if there's anything that we can do to help(maybe thru suggestions or recommendations on technical matters) just feel free to let us know so we can try to help you guys speed things up

After waiting for years now for this feature, all I really want is the option to change the tenant domain once, to some random set of characters or numbers, so that a renaming will never be required again.

Waiting for release please! :-)

Seriously how is this not fixed by now, how many years do we have to wait? Organizations re-brand! Come on Microsoft!

Come ON Microsoft!!!!
Come ONNNNNNNNNN already!!!
long awaited, often promised - now the question is, when will the "working on it" state change?
hopefully not in 2 years.
This feature is a must have in today's industries, with mergers and buyouts

@matthew.carlson: Has their been any progress with regard to being able to change the tenant name? Is the feature currently under development? If so, when can we expect the feature to be available? I would really like not having to go through all the trouble associated with migrating our whole organisation just to allow for such a seemingly simple operation.
@James Nicholas - That's not what is rolling out. They are rolling out the ability to rename a URL, not the tenant.
From the roadmap site:
In the SharePoint admin center you will be able to change site URLs by renaming them. So for example, if you have a site https://contoso.sharepoint.com/sites/Develpment, using the SharePoint admin center you can rename the site URL to correct the incorrect spelling of “Development."

This is road-mapped to be deployed by end of year. Current road-map indicates that is being rolled out now with delivery time frame of Q4 Calendar year 2019.

Matthew, is there any chance for an ETA on this ... this is a post of DESPERATION!
I think Microsoft should consider upping the priority for this request as now a days we see more companies being split or merged. Thank you.
I am at wits end on this. When is Microsoft going to allow this?
