This definitely needs to be done ASAP to keep SharePoint relevant against the many other EDM solutions that are gaining ground in this space (e.g. M-Files)

Document sets are one of the greatest features of SharePoint document management. It's part of many enterprise EDM success story with SharePoint. Including this feature in modern document librarires would garanty many more success stories !

Hi - any update on this? Clearly there's been a lot of 'Thinking' by Microsoft since October 2016...!

I drafted a few ideas in this blog post: https://sp-pains-gains.blogspot.ca/2017/07/sharepoint-2016-document-set-ideas.html. Hope they can help with the document sets and folders design for the Modern UI

And, while you are working on it, fix current document set bugs and limitations (see https://sp-pains-gains.blogspot.ca/2017/07/sharepoint-2016-document-set-bugs-and.html)

Any comments on this? I am really surprised that this is one of the hidden treasures of SharePoint and yet not investment from MS

Another vote for not opening document sets in a new tab. Or at least make it an option that can be disabled. Poor user experience and against modern web standards to force opening new tabs.

The Modern look is, in my opinion, a nice addition, especially if responsiveness is important. However, is becomes confusing and almost useless when working with document sets. These are still presented in the Classic look and, even worse, will always open in a new tab. Solving this would make a lot of people happy.

Document sets are great for the replication of metadata to files contained in the set. It would be even nicer to have this feature at the level of the site. When the user creates a site, he completes metadata that describe the work topic of the site and these metadata are replicated to files as the doc sets does currently.

bulk tagging of metadata to documents within document set is core to our operating model.
please implement!
(I seem to recall you had implemented something then rolled it back??) -

It appears that in a modern view document library, when using document sets, that it only displays the Name field and none of the custom site columns associated with the doc set content type. This is a pretty key piece in enabling the modern experience, please consider rolling out updates to support document sets in the modern experience!

This is the last item for us to fully adopt the modern experience...

The Modern pages lack the ability to embed lists/libraries as web parts.
Modern Document libraries don't display document sets.Nothing about these experiences is "modern" or even useful.

I posted a question about this earlier today to the Microsoft Community forum. The answer I received was that this is not on the road map.

Document Sets play an important role in the way we work and having different look and feels leads to lack of consistency to user which could lead to confusion.

I'm assuming this is a request that document sets are viewed in the same style as the rest of the modern library experience?
At the moment, if the modern library experience is switched on, folders work as expected, but opening a document set sends the user back to the classic view, which is not a good experience. This may be on it's way to being done but without this, we cannot roll out the modern experience.

It's also ignoring that when you click on a document set in the modern library. It will open the document set in a new Internet Explorer tab. The default behaviour must be in the same window / tab.

It's a bit painful to see that the modern document libraries are released without proper support for this. You can still use the document sets when switching back to classic mode, but that can only be done per individual user within a site collection.
End users become very confused with this, and previously invested effort in streamlining document management processes based on document sets are lost...
