The Export to Excel button creates an .iqy file OK, but we can't get the .iqy file to run the query in Excel; it fails immediately. Doing it manually fails as well, so I'm thinking the button itself is not to blame but the way Excel is doing the query (and/or some security setting somewhere perhaps).
We've worked through with Microsoft on another forum but it seems the whole process is still "legacy" and should be "modern". We could not get it to work, which is a shame because it's such a useful feature. I've had to recreate the process in Flow but it's per-List / per-Library and not as flexible.

We need that option for Excel on Mac! It is still just for Windows based machines, because ActiveX don't work on macs.

This was implemented, I believe?

For lists it appears that this is a Chrome/Firefox/non-IE-specific bug. I was hunting for the export to Excel option and came across the comments in the following blog post. Try opening it in IE instead and the Export to Excel was an option for my 'new experience' list.
"there’s a bug in Chrome we’re tying to work around, and have hidden the Excel button in the interim wince Chrome doesn’t work as expected."
My guess would be that it's related to the browser's application call which should natively work for IE but maybe not Chrome.

Not sure if this is related... we use the Excel Web Access webpart extensively, with almost 3,000 users, giving them the ability to Download a Snapshot is imperative. We just upgraded to SharePoint 2016 and now this feature is gone! We are devasted, now my days will be filled with endless requests from users requesting me to send them what they need. Please, please, add this functionality back!

This is an essential feature for several of our document libraries. I really hope this gets added back in.
