Allow PDFs to launch in a new tab
When I open PDFs on other website, these PDFs launch in a new tab. This behaviour is set within the internet browser. Within SharePoint, however, despite this, PDFs open within the same tab they are launched from. This is not a user friendly experience. Often, users close the tab without realising they are closing SharePoint entirely. They also often need to open multiple PDFs side by side. Tab behaviour in SharePoint should be governed by internet browser settings like other websites.
In the new Doc libraries, all other files types open in a new tab - Word, Excel, PPT, etc. But if you open a PDF, it is in the same tab. The experience to close is different then - use Back for PDF, but close the tab for all else. This is confusing and cause people to accidentally close the tab (and lose the Doc Library) when viewing a PDF. Please make it consistent across all file types opened from a Doc Library.
We currently invoke PDF's to download and open in the local DPF reader application, to get around this very issue. It would be fantastic to get preview of PDF's and ability to open them in multiple tabs. This will aid the ability to compare PDF documents quickly.
