Dynamic Column width for default Title column in SharePoint List
Currently the default "Title" column does not have an adjustable width in the new modern SharePoint view only, classic view is unaffected.
So if the column contains 1 row and the cell contains very little text the column width will not adjust to fit the width of the text and leave a large empty space, pushing adjacent columns to the right off the screen.

Thanks for your feedback! We’re happy to report that your suggestion is now part of persistent column widths. The column width can be saved as part of the view and each user’s preference will be saved in local storage.

I realize that the width of ”Title” column becomes very long when is displayed within a modern UI, depending on the number of characters of its column once arranged by the defaulted setting of a custom list. Therefore, I hope that without making any limits on the number of characters, I will be able to use the setting enabling to arrange the column width so that it could not be long along with the number of characters or displaying method. -

I need the first list column to be resizeable to it's correct width and not default to an artificial width (or approx. 70 characters).

This is a must!
And it should also impact the view of the List Preview Webpart. Right now, text just cut off.. and the minimalist design of the list view does not show that you can edit the size of the column, leaving end users frustrated and confused.

Many of the view editing controls have no impact on the Modern doc library. For example, the View Style controls do nothing. The shaded view was really nice in some situations.
However, the ability simply to set a default column width that sticks would address many user complaints.
Thank you for your work on this! By and large, the Modern experience is very nice.

In the classic view of Sharepoint, the column widths were set based on the content of the columns. In the new view, the widths appear fixed, which means valuable real estate is taken up with blank space, and other needed details are pushed off the screen where people can't see them. This is not a good user experience. We have had to revert libraries until this can get resolved.

Yes, of course.
MS, why wouldn't you have thought of this when designing the modern library UI?
Oh, yes, it's just part of the continuation of the Agile / Scrum mess that is SharePoint.

As soon as I exit the library and/or site and later return to it, the dead space is back. It's especially annoying when other columns, which should be visible, are not as a result and I have to scroll horizontally to see them.
This is unacceptable to our users: having to reconfigure the column width every time a user opens the library.
The width of the column should 'fit the content' and be responsive to the display/device that is being used. There is always a point, when on a smaller display, that scrolling or wrapping will be necessary, but I am viewing this on a large monitor and still having to scroll to see the required details when there's nearly 3" of white space! -

Just ran into this myself. It appears that on "modern site" lists you cannot resize columns to show content. We now have a list with loads of empty space in the first colums and information being squashed onto multiple lines in columns near the end which looks terrible.
Please give us the option to define column width in list views! -

I have to scroll horizontally to see all of my columns. Could you set the column widths to "auto" so there isn't so much blank space?

And the fact that the Title column doesn't wrap anymore is really unfortunate. My users hate the new UI.

Yes! The column sizing should be view-specific and remain when a public view is saved by an owner or designer. Column sizing in personal views should be able to be adjusted and saved by individual users.

Make it easier to change width of columns. Hard to navigate page in a readable format.

Please add an ability to predefine the column widths in the View Design page...
Its great that you can resize in the list view, but sucks that changes don't persist or that the list designer can't predefine them...makes for a very clunky list!

Definitely would like to see this quick win. Seems like a needless default that takes up valuable screen real estate.
