Stop opening links in new tab in modern pages
Please stop opening links in a new tab by default in modern pages.
It is against standard web behaviour (https://www.w3.org/TR/2012/NOTE-WCAG20-TECHS-20120103/G200), and is confusing to users when they end up with 10+ tabs open when navigating even the simplest site.
Make it optional by all means, it makes sense in a number of cases, just please not by default.
In modern pages, we open links within SharePoint in the same tab by default, and external links in a new tab. In the text web part, users can specify to open links in a new tab, but that isn’t the default behavior. Similarly, for navigation links, they follow the same rule (within SharePoint, same tab, external to SharePoint in a new tab). This is true of the modern web parts that support linking as well (hero, quick links, images, etc.) This is the pattern we’ve adopted for consistency.
After reviewing other areas of modern sites, like the site pages library, document libraries, lists, site contents, etc. we did find some different opening behaviors which we’ll review and resolve.
Can you help us understand if this pattern isn’t meeting your expectation, if we have some inconsistencies within modern pages we’ve missed, or if it’s the other areas of modern sites where we need to focus more attention?
this is the most annoying thing ever, please fix this ASAP! It even happens when just going back to home from certain menus, not even leaving Sharepoint -.-
We have workflow in sharepoint opening tabs at each step and it's very confusing for users. The workflow steps completes and the new tab displays the list with the same view as the previous tab where the workflow was started.
This is a major issue... please fix this

when creating a Modern SharePoint site and want to add it into the Microsoft Teams none of the links works because the system wants to open a new tab and there is no new tab on Teams.
So Kinda Big issue
Finding it really annoying having links from the Site Contents page always open in new tabs, and likewise, a library with multiple document sets - clicking on a document set opens it in a new tab. 10 minutes in and we have way too many tabs open already.

Thanks for this, I was about to open an idea on this exact same behavior. The new modern look is very nice, but opening a TAB at each step is confusing for my users and get their browser crazy!
What I would like is to get this functionality for external links!
Assuming no traction on this one?

I also find this very frustrating. Seems that this 'new tab' behavior happens in the top nav bar but not the left side quick links.
This should be an option. Currently I found the only way to prevent this is to remove all top nav, which is a poor option.
