Add managed metadata as filter option in Highlighted Content webpart in Modern Pages
Filter options now only include title or content search, and managed properties.
Adding managed metadata will improve this powerful webpart!

This was released quite some time ago; sorry for missing this user voice request. https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/use-the-highlighted-content-web-part-e34199b0-ff1a-47fb-8f4d-dbcaed329efd#bkmk_filtersort

We have migrated our managed metadata to the cloud and found that it has nowhere near the effectiveness that it had on premise. Please do release this, it is crucial to success of an enterprise portal.

This is an old thread, but closely matches my issue. It's now 2020 and enhancements have been released for Highlighted Content Web Part but it continues to be underwhelming and practically useless for my site collections. A key issue is that Managed Properties (column names) need to be registered in the tenant for these to be available to included in filters.
In contrast, the News web part filters immediately pick up any page properties (i.e. custom columns) added to the Site Pages library. Can the Highlighted Content web team have a chat with the News web part team so that you can bring some consistency to the filters for these web parts. For all intents and purposes they work quite similarly, a key difference being the end presentation of 'links'/content in the web part. -
