This is probably related to Yammer in some way. At some point comments on modern pages should just be integrated with Yammer so we get this kind of functionality.
Totally agree this should have been there from the start, so hoping it happens. I'm getting requests about this all the time! -

Any update on this? It seems such a fundamental thing.

Should have subscribe to page for comments as well

Same here. The internal marketing division badly needs this feature before going live with their modern communication site.

Any updates, we are getting more pressure from our users in getting this capability

This is the top missing feature to me!!! Comments are such a benefit but useless without any notification that notifies about it. I love to build a KB on a modern site - but I do not want to surf all sites every day to manually check for comments. Please, please, please - priorize NOW

Here is my solution how you could make alerts on comments for Classic Publishing Site in SharePoint -> https://rasper87.wordpress.com/2018/11/21/notification-center-inside-sharepoint-on-prem/

Comment track/monitor and notifications options is really required. Not only the notifications, we should also need an option to track or monitory and setup a flow to capture the comments data.

There is value in separating comment alerts from page alerts. People who monitor a page may not want comment alerts (e.g. normal user), but someone supporting the page and those who add a comment should want to know about comment changes. Comment alert should be added automatically when I add a comment. I can remove the comment alert if I don't want it.

Yes Please. Need this for communication pages! Would love to be able to subscribe other users (or a group) to a page as well.

allowing comments on news pages is terrific for an employee engagement site - but now I have to assign someone the task of visiting each page twice a day to see if there are any new comments. an alert would be the best practice here.

Making the comments visible in Flow without having to mess about with APIs would go a long way to fixing this.

Please! It is really difficult to keep up with the discussion in my students papers without this. It works like a charm in Googles documents.

Not only basic alerts but a way to subscribe to the conversation to get notifications if others have posted or replied.
