New Communication SIte - Add Categories to News Articles
Categorize and filter news articles on new publishing site
Ability to select category (or multiple) for a news article when you create it. Plus the ability to filter the news widget by category.
Exactly like you can for events. Plus the ability to select multiple categories if you choose.
Today you can add metadata to modern pages and news. Also the news web part currently supports filtering news by metadata, as long as the source of the content is the current site.
We’re working to enable this same filtering across sites right now.
The metadata filtering doesn't seem to work. I created a column with options. The news webpart isn't picking it up.
Also there should be an option to just show 1 item. For some reason the lowest number of items can only be set to 2. We have a use case to only show the latest new article.

this one of the things you look at the web part and you think it should just work then you try it and it doesn't, please sort it!
Also need an option to display the news category on the web part as well as have as a option for filtering on the see all page

I would love an update on this. The working on it note is from 1.5 years ago.

EXACTLY my issue. I had to add a custom property to the 'site pages' library to choose some categories of where to 'display/share' an article, only to then find out that the web part is limited in filtering by the custom property I added.

Can we also add the ability to sort by article date that is populated by the user and may differ from the Modified or Create date field?

Any updates on being able to filter across sites?
It would also be nice to be able to expire a news page to remove it. All News gets old, but there is no way to manage this. Or since you Promote a page to News, perhaps add a way to Unpromote a News article? This is the first CMS I have ever used that doesn't include a simple way to remove an old News article. You say delete the page, but deleting articles and assets with no archive is not a solution.
It would really be nice to schedule news items with post date and expiration date.

Use case: I built a communication site that we're designing to be community-driven news curation resource where people from a lot of different business areas can share 'tech-tips' that are less focused on what you can do with a resource (SharePoint, Flow, Teams, Smartsheet, Asana, etc.) and more about how people are using it in their specific job area to add more contextual information on how to apply the resource. I want to be able to categorize the news posts and leverage those categories to map articles with category "x" are sent to approvers in group "y"
This would really help engagement by allowing each business area to govern their own articles.
Any news on this feature. Needed it yesterday :)
Emerson is interested in this globally. It will be very useful, especially if there is a category for lanuage.

Is this done or is it still being worked on?
I know we can now add custom metadata, refer to this in highlight web part and/or add the properties web part to the page but I thought this was going to be something a bit more targeted at categorisation in particular that would work with the News web part.
This would be amazing - any idea on when its going to get done?

Its beautiful when a Great Plan Comes Together
Been working on it since February. Any update? Functionality exists with Events. Should work the same way. Should be able to categorize news posts like General, Human Resources, Business Operations, etc. And be able to filter the news widget based on which page you are adding. All news can flow to home page. Only HR news in the News widget on the HR page. Please make this happen. We are going to have to roll out with a work around (like separate Yammer feed for HR) if this is not implemented.
Can you update us?

rather than you guys working on it, it would be better idea if you can share the code either on Github or any free code sharing platform. Let public edit the code and you control the commit/build.
Make all SPFx webparts open source!
