Open links in new tabs
allow users to open links in new tabs
I feel like this is obvious and as much as all the IT experts want to talk about how it's "consistent" with the way modern websites work the end users and the CEO wants it. plus it would be great if once moving off site the back button didn't take you back to a folder instead of the home page.
We should be able to select which links open in a new tab/window. When we link to some documents or across departments we need to be able to control this behavior.

I would like to have the feature to open links in a new tab in Mega Menu. This should be a Option while creating the menu item. Please implement this feature ASAP.

Even if we could add the target=_blank to the end of the url when adding it would be helpful. Now if I try to add anything to the end or the URL SharePoint strips out the qualifier.
one way around this is to use the fact that SP opens external links in new tabs to your benefit by taking the internal URL, plugging it into tinyurl or similar, and getting an external URL for it, then use that external URL for the button and voila!
We created a series of guides and the quick links are used to direct people to additional help or assets. Many have reported that it is annoying to click on links and then have to click back, navigate back to that portion on a long page etc. Could you please consider adding a checkbox in the properties 'Open in new tab/window' so its an option. Thank you

Additionally, when the user clicks the "back" button in the browser, it shows them the document library for the item they opened instead of returning them to the page they were on prior. This is the biggest problem I have because once users click "back" they are lost.

It is so annoying that I do not have the option to open links in a new tab in SharePoint online. I use lists that I need to be in thought the day and to have to manually open up different tabs is so archaic and not user friendly. Please add this option seems like an easy fix.

Yes would like a checkbox option in the webpart properties to allow open in new tab.
We really need it!!!!
Provide a drop down where you can select if the link will open in the same page, new window or new tab
Provide option to choose link should open in new tab or same tab in Site setting.
In the modern page, in case of list webpart, normal links are opening in new tab but document links are opening in same tab.
Yes, please make it an option to open all types of links in a new tab in all webparts. For example, I have created a list where users are supposed to open and read through several documents. When I use the list webpart, the documents open in the same tab making it hard for the user to navigate back to the list.

I concur, this is very annoying, give us an option to turn it off.

This would also be good in the Highlighted Content web part.
Highlighted Content is great for aggregating relevant documents from across SharePoint on a single page. But a user who needs to read multiple documents from that page has to open and load the page in multiple tabs before clicking each different document links.
It would save so much effort if a user could open each file in a new tab directly from the page that hosts the Highlighted Content part.

This will be a huge win !!!

When using the quick links feature any microsoft documents open in a new browser window, and users can then edit. It is causing lots of confusion - and people saving their live documents straight onto the site.
While I like the implementation as a default pattern, i really do feel that you should add a toggle to open in a new tab in all the modern web parts where links can be configured:
- Call to action
Depending on the customer, the often want to link to pages in different locations within their environment and these can be conceptually located in very different corners of the information environment so it makes sense to afford the option to open in a new tab.
What we notice now as a result is that organisations are settling for less optimal page designs as they end up using the text web part everywhere as it has the open in a new tab option for hyperlinks. The result is that all the great work done on the modern web parts isn't taken advantage of in all the scenarios they could be. This doesn't go unnoticed by customers and they all share the same frustration.
This is a very straightforward change and not hard to implement, I suggest its given priority and you'd be able to many of the user voice duplicates on this suggest and satisfy probably a few hundred votes.
It's so frustrating that links don't open in a new tab - compounded by the lack of breadcrumb navigation. Users are constantly getting lost in the site. Please please enable this.
