Specifically the ability to remove the author from the object would be helpful so that users don't contact individuals and instead use our contact form.

Highlighted content is a great feature - but some basic customization is urgently needed. We have our own schema and need to encourage use of those custom fields - the lack of display options for highlighted content makes life difficult.
We really, really need this.
Moving a file to a Communication site should not show me as the author in the highlighted content widget for all files.
The highlighted content web part should be able to select the fields to be shown in the display. It should be the "Modern" replacement for the Content Search web part, where you query the data and select the columns to display.
I totally agree with Amanda from 3 December. I was really happy when I found this wepart - it was just what I needed. Until I realised that my personal card ended up on every little piece of information. As my organisation's webeditor, my name would be all over the place.
I would be sorry to see Filename displayed instead of Title, though. The ideal solution would of course be to give us the choice.
I love the concept of this web part, but not being able to hide the people card on it renders it absolutely useless. I work for a very large company and touch hundreds of pieces of content a day as the web manager -- I don't "own" the content, but I have to manage/fix it for hundreds of other people. I can't have my card displaying everywhere!
The ability to add fields the webpart would be a significant benefit. Until that option is available I will have to use the Document Library webpart.

Add additional display options to the highlighted content web part, such as as a dropdown menu AND the ability to hide the icon and column header from the list display option.
We have a very in-depth knowlegde base (over 6,000 sharepoint pages) organized by topic, with each topic having anywhere from 2-20 pages associated with it. I need some way for a person to navigate all the content within one topic, without making each topic it's own team site. How do others do this???
Or you could create a new web part specifically for contextual navigation. Perhaps a tabbed dropdown menu builder that can appear under the page title.
Or...add a new page layout to the communication sites that allows for a left navigation panel that it customizable per page template.
We need definitely this change for controlling the appearance of this webpart. Please implement this editing. Thanks

As others have said, it would be useful to be able to choose which fields display on the Highlighted Content tiles. My users don't want to know who edited a file - they want to know the author.
This DEFINITELY need to be changed to allow us to control the appearance of this webpart.

Is this not a must have for many users? Why thinking of it? I you are not a skilled developer able to create custom webparts you are stuck to very limited webparts. Why aren't you at microsoft just deliver highly configureable webparts to dupport display templates as you did before.

The highlighted content web part is very useful, but would be nice to have more options for how it renders. For use cases where site pages have metadata fields associated to them, it would be great if you could choose which metadata fields appear in the thumbnail view. For example, most of our target audience doesn't care who last edited the site page or the name of the parent site it sits under, but there is metadata associated as custom columns in the page library that would be great to show in the thumbnail. Some other ideas:
The ability to conditionally format the fill color based on metadata attributes.
Edit the text in the thumbnail
Mouse over text associated to the thumbnail.
Eliminate the sharepoint icon, or the ability to customize this icon
I would really like to see where the owner could add any fields they wish (would love to be able to have a description under the title).
Also would love to be able to change the thumbnail that is used. Displaying the 1st slide of a deck isn't always the best thumbnail. If we had a thumbnail column in our list, and could select it in the webpart as the column to get the URL from, that would be great.
One last thing; be able to remove the link to the site homepage link. Doesn't make sense for that to be there on every card.
Lots more flexibility needed to make this webpart useful. Such as:
1. Toggle ON/OFF site origin
2. Toggle author ON/OFF, this is particularly annoying now i've created lots of pages on behalf of others, but the content is nothing to do with me
3. Removal of homepage from the list. The widget should display pages EXCLUDING the homepage, this is highly irritating given that the homepage is the most edited page so is always at the top.
4. Removal/ability to configure that DUMB sharepoint page icon (utterly useless)
Like many other comments here, I too would like the ability to remove the author details and the last edited details from the highlighted content. Not a good look when sharing something to external users. It just looks messy and doesn't add any value.
The automatic formatting of the title is a pain. I labelled my folders with capital letters where needed and the auto formatting of the title totally ignored it and I had to retype all the titles.
The issue we have with this web part is that it shows the site title a link. Users are clicking on it which just loads the same page (since the web part is on the home page already), so we need to be able to remove the site link.
We also did not want Modified by but found this fix for that which works:

There is a workaround that I found to remove this data or at least make it appear as blank. If you go to the "Modified By" column in the library the Highlighted Content web part is connected to, select "Created" from the "Show Field" drop down. While this is not a perfect fix, I was able to meet my requirement to remove this data from the Highlighted Content web part view.

I see this is in THINKING ABOUT IT status. This is critical to the success of our intranet. We have people really trying to use metadata to pull content onto pages dynamically. I've sold it and people have bought in, but the inability to hide what is perceived as "noise" makes people use the ugly List View instead making it look like a network folder.

When using it to display NEWS (because the users like the Film Strip format) it displays the Created By column but should display the Author Byline. It also displays a SharePoint icon to indicate the file type. Would really like the option NOT to show that.
