Left menu/submenu expand and/or collapse default behavior setting
In modern view sites, the current left menu/submenu default behavior for submenu items is set to collapsed (this was changed from expanded about a year ago). There should be a way to select the default left menu/submenu expansion and contraction behavior either at the menu level, or at the very least at the site level. The current behavior of collapsed hides much of the functional items available on the site, that is, unless users have expanded the left menu enough to where they have committed the menu structure to memory - a tiresome exercise.

The left navigation list takes up a lot of my free space when I'm scrolling through the SharePoint Site. I would suggestion making the left Navigation Expand/Collaspe where it slides left and right so I can read content more easily.

The main complaint from users at our company after migrating from SP 2013 is the collapsed menus. We would love for them to have the option for expanded by default

It would be very helpful to be able to choose to expand this by default as we do not have a Table of Content web part anymore in the modern sites.

As manager of new SPO sites with several libraries in each I can foresee the two clicks to switch libraries every time is going to be frustrating and time consuming. Big drawback from both network folders and SP2010.

Agree! Most frustrating having only "collapsed". Doesn't seem to be a way to change this so that you can have "expanded" by default. Having to use work arounds to get the left navigation/menu to look how we want to is a pain and not efficient to maintain longer term.

Set the setting to Expand

Users find this behavior frustrating, as it's the only means to provide a breadcrumb trail so users know how they got where they are.

The quick launch defaults to collapsing subhead areas. However, expansion of the collapsed areas doesn't "stick". When a user expands a section and clicks into one of the subhead areas, the screen refreshes and the section re-collapses, so the user has no indication of where s/he is in the quick launch menu. Please keep collapsed areas open as the user navigates through the site.

In modern sites set the default menu to collapsed. These are currently set to expanded and show all menu items which clearly defeats the purpose, since you are able to collapse them manually.
Even better let admins toggle the state of a nested menu item, allowing certain menu items to be expanded and others collapsed.
