Currently a user needs to be assigned a security role with "Delete" permissions granted in order to simply RENAME a file or folder.
Please enable RENAME for users that have only been granted "Edit" permissions.
It is especially frustrating that the "Rename" option shows up for users with "Edit" rights, but gives them an error unless they have been granted "Delete" permissions in addition.
Need the ability for a user to be able to rename a file in our SharePoint while not allowing them to delete. +1
I'm trying to build a massive group system and my users constantly click delete instead of rename because they are 'close together". Has there been any change to allow rename but not delete??
Rename without deleting is Crucial For our document management to function. This works in 2013. Microsoft needs to rectify this flaw asap.
This is a huge problem. The security of our core client files containing financial data and PII are being compromised. Every. Single. Day. I have to allow file deletion to every single staff member regardless of their organizational role (even to interns!) on every single client folder and all documents therein just so that they can have the ability to rename files/folders. Apparently the need for this arises multiple times a day for each user, so it's not an option to disallow renaming.
I made an alert for deletions on that document library to monitor what is being deleted, but there are several every day and I have no way of knowing if any given deletion was legitimate or not. For instance, staff say they store unsigned versions of contracts in a deal folder, then once a signed version is available, they delete the unsigned one and upload the signed one. I can't police which deletions are legit and which aren't after the fact - we need essentially a Power App to request file deletions that requires approval of *their* manager, not me, the lowly SharePoint admin.

The Contribute_NoDelete permission is a great option for our users to simply upload items to a library, and we don't need them deleting anyone else's stuff by mistake, but the option to rename a file should really be implemented.

We basically need to give most people access to add and edit existing documents but not delete documents from a library. With the current implementation of SharePoint all versions, there is no way to give rename without also giving delete.
I'm surprised this is not a bigger issue? Is there some other way around this?
Agree on this one! This is causing us huge issues, especially if a user creates a new Word Online document directly into a library - they can't change the name from 'Document1'.

Any updates on this -- it is very important that users are able to RENAME files.
