Add version to document
In a document library I would like to see the ability to add the version (column) to a document. For example when adding manuals to a document library, and versioning is enabled in the settings, the document should show the version on a predefined place, for example in the header.
Ideally it should be possible to add the version to a document template in content types.
From what I have searched on internet there used be an option to achieve this with labels but labels have been disabled according this article: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/sharepoint-online-tags-notes-feature-retired-77851bd5-6d5e-42fe-9bf6-d7c17eeb771f?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

Kevin Gunning, can you please link to a source that shows you are able to still add "Version" to the document template in the modern doc library from the “Quick Parts” “Document Property” selections? I am unable to find that selection in my templates on my modern libraries at this time (considering you can switch between classic and modern on the fly and in the library settings, I'm not sure this is actually a factor). As a workaround I have used an OOTB Document Property "Publish Date" to add as a Quick Part to a "document to track if a document is the latest in comparison to a duplicate saved elsewhere.

Labels seem to still be active in modern doc libraries

I am in process of migrating a document management library to SharePoint Online, this was one of the deciding factors to use SharePoint to track document versions from within the document in case the documents are emailed or saved elsewhere to help users determine if they have the most current document. Hopefully this will get some traction and make a comeback.
