Ability to apply "Protect Document" (read-only recommended) on a folder or library
Our organization appreciates the modern option under File | Info | Protect Document to set files to "read-only recommended" instead of modifying permissions. It allow for files to still be easily collaborated on while preventing accidental changes. Brilliant!
We are finding an increasing amount of scenarios where all files stored in a specific folder or library would benefit from the option to mass-apply this setting. Essentially, providing the flexibility to put a gate on reference files that should stay static unless edits are necessary.

Voted on this too.. but in the meantime, we solved for it using MS Flow. Add a yes/no column to the doc library called "_MarkAsFinal" (no quotes) and then create a Flow that changes the _MarkAsFinal column to "Yes" - We run our flows every couple days, but if you have a high-traffic document library you could have it run more frequently..

It's a bit silly for such a massively used application like SharePoint to let everyone edit fies by default.... and not have an option to stop that. The default option should be open in read only, and then you choose to edit the file, and then edit, Otherwise, there's always a risk that something is going to be changed unintentionally. At the least, there should be an option to change this default behaviour either for the entire site, or a subset based on subsites/domains/groups/something in bulk.

I too would like to see this setting available, globally as well as on a library. The setting "Always Open Read-Only"
