Enable nested menu items in left-hand (Current) navigation
Why not be able to nest links in the Current navigation? Making a link a sub-link of another (e.g., via ">> Demote" and "<< Promote" buttons) would enable the nesting and create a pop-out menu when hovering over the left navigation item. This could work similarly to putting links inside a folder in the Global Nav, which creates a dropdown menu. If nothing is nested, the menu acts the same way as it does currently.

You can do this using demote/promote in the navigator bar edit but only if there is a major page to subordinate to. What would be really useful is to be able to create navigation headings without an unwanted page attached to them, as was the case in older versions of SP.

Just wanted to add that Current navigation, using Structural Navigation was recently broken on the Modern UI document libraries. It now shows a dropdown under the parent, but it only lists one site. My setup as 7 sites that should be shown under the dropdown. I like the dropdown functionality, but it needs to be fixed by Microsoft.

Follow-up UI idea: To enable this feature, in the Edit pane for a navigation folder, create a field with these options:
- Display as simple link (children are shown as they currently are)
- Display as dropdown
- Display as accordion pane
- Display as pop-out menuThis way the admin could choose independently how he wants each group of links to behave.

@Mark: Nope, because Managed Metadata requires gutting the Current Navigation and replacing it with term sets. This is often either overkill, or incompatible with the navigational needs of certain websites like ours. My suggestion is a change to the way Current Navigation works in publishing sites, to enable a more robust user experience.
