Add option to inherit metadata from folders
While Document Sets may work well for some scenarios, it doesn't work for ours. In an instance where multiple folders full of documents are uploaded to a library, you can then add metadata to the folders using the Quick edit feature. However, the metadata does not cascade down to the files within the folders. It is a very time-consuming, manual process to open each folder and add the metadata to all the files within the folder. Unfortunately our use-case requires the use of the folders. We have yet to find a suitable third party tool or Flow solution that meets this need.

And using Document Sets requires complex setup and complicates other site navigation - e.g. building Quicklinks for direct Folder navigation on an index page. Folders show up in Site> Document Libraries> [LibraryName]> [FolderName] and Document Sets don't.... And they don't nest nicely either.
Why can't we have ONE architectural object that combines the ease of use of Folders with the metadata properties of Document Sets?

you could script 'upgrading' the folders for doc sets after upload
(and are you very sure you cant start with doc sets...?) -

OP here. As an additional note, the metadata is different each time a folder is uploaded, so using Column default value settings is not an option for us either.
