custom file extension
Allow adding/removing a file type to the search index in SharePoint online

Thanks for your feedback! We’d like to understand better. Could you give an example of when you’d like to remove a file type?

As SharePoint modern libraries have no restrictions on the file types that can be uploaded, it would be great to ensure search can make use of at least a larger array of file types e.g. image file types (.jpg, .jpeg, .png). By allowing these file types to be crawled it will help when trying to open them in client applications from search results.

I agree. If MSFT can't add some handlers to certain file extensions (like .json and .sql), maybe we could at least inherit the handler from .txt to crawl those?
But we would also like to be able to use a new extension (i.e. ".abcd") and use file handlers to give it a different icon, but have search treat it like a text file, for example.
To answer the UserVoice Admin, I could see removing a file type from search if it's one I recently added. -

Could a .dotm file be indexed if the feature were available?
