Prompt for Metadata when creating a new file using OOS
When creating a new file via the Online Application interface optional and required metadata is not presented to the user for entry.
This results is in files being created and closed without metadata.
A prompt to enter the meta data when starting the file would be great.
If we had the ability to automatically lookup data for such fields if for example department was a column this would be great. We could have an option to lookup from the current users profile "Dept" value.
I would like to be able to manage the logic in the prompt.
This would be a big hit I think.
Having this would really be a great step in getting us to a true online experience and away from rich clients.

I agree with all of these comments. This is a 'must have' for us to continue with considering SharePoint as the platform for our Document Management System. Otherwise it is way to difficult and users will end up with heaps of files in 'Unassigned!'

I have been reticent to change over to the modern libraries due to this issue, among others.

Indeed, this is problematic when I'm implementing custom content types right now. When a user creates a new item within a library using one of the content types I've placed there, it goes straight to opening the document in Office Online, with no opportunity to fill in any metadata, even *required* columns. The user has to save and leave the document, find it in the list - which can be difficult with no metadata filled in - then select and edit it.
It would make a lot more sense for the metadata dialog box to appear right when creating a new file, the same as when one is being uploaded.

Yes, current tagging experience in Office client is subpar. Users should be prompted during the save process instead of going back to open the Properties menu after save is completed. Adobe Acrobat already has the desired functionality - Microsoft should take a look.
