It'd be great to get an understanding of what exactly is being "worked on". I wouldn't expect secrets, but the current Cloud Search Service application the solution that was being "worked on", or are there further enhancements / capabilities coming to on-prem SharePoint that will meet this request?
To provide some further clarification: The app launcher synchronization feature is great for hybrid scenarios, but it would be even better if all of the application tiles from O365 synced down to on-prem so that user experience was even more fluid.
