URLs in SharePoint are horrible, just horrible. Here's some examples from our O365 tenant:
https://tenant/_layouts/15/me.aspx?u=23336553-9876-43f9-b1b3-d07ee856148a&v=work - That's the URL for my profile on Delve. What on earth does "_layouts/15" mean? What's that ugly GUID doing in there? What does "v=work" mean? How about a nice sensible URL like...ooo, let's see, oh, I know... https://tenant/people/jamiet Don't you think that might be more sensible? Something that someone could actually type into their browser?
Here's another beauty:
Good god, what IS all that crap? "_layouts/15" again? Reeeeally? And do I need to know that its an .aspx page? Of course I don't, that rubbish shouldn't be exposed.
Saving the best for last, viewing a document in the browser:
What the hell is a wopiframe? (I actually do know but the average joe doesn't need to see it). At least you managed to get the name of the document into this, progress at least. But would this be so difficult: https://tenant/sites/site-collection/team-site/file=Market%20Analyst%20Contacts.xlsx&action=default ? That's something I could legitimately type into a browser.
There are a great many things I don't like about SharePoint but the URLs are way out in front of everything else. Please, fix this horrible state of affairs.
For reference, please read Ben Balter's excellent article on URLs, especially the "great URLs" section: http://ben.balter.com/2014/10/07/expose-process-through-urls/#great-urlsJamie Thomson supported this idea ·
