File explorer is not going to work in Edge or other modern browsers. Don't hold your breath.
There are browser-based solutions that offer almost the same functionality as File Explorer (browse folder structures, upload, download, zip items, search, properties, delete, rename, metadata, attach files to email, ...).

Looks like this request has been addressed by browser vendors. Edge and the latest Chrome (version 76) support drag and drop of email attachments from Outlook directly to SharePoint. There is no need to first save the documents on your desktop and then upload them.

If you require advanced functionality like setting custom metadata you will need additional tools (e.g. SLIM Companion Explorer).

Looks like this problem has been addressed by browser vendors. Edge and the latest Chrome (version 76) support drag and drop of emails and/or email attachments from Outlook directly to SharePoint. There is no need to first save the emails on your desktop and then upload them. The emails are uploaded as msg files.

If you require advanced functionality like extracting email metadata such as Subject, From, Sent date, ... or set custom metadata you will need additional tools (e.g. SLIM Companion Explorer).

This is indeed useful functionality. Until this becomes available OOTB you will need to use 3rd party tools like https://store.office.com/app.aspx?assetid=WA104146066 and https://collab365.directory/listing/slim-companion/

Fully agree. Documents and emails are not well integrated using SharePoint + Outlook.
There is a browser-based tool that allows users to select a document (or multiple documents) in SharePoint and directly attach the document in SharePoint to a new Outlook email message. No Outlook or SharePoint Add-ins required. See Collab365 (https://collab365.directory/office365-sharepoint/email-tools-for-sharepoint-and-office-365/) for further details. I am affiliated with one of the vendors.

There are several Office Add-ins that provide this functionality. See https://store.office.com/search.aspx?productgroup=SharePoint&qu=zip
Some Add-ins are free and some require a license. There is also a browser-based tool that allows downloading of complete folders structures as a zip file. See Collab365 site https://collab365.directory/office365-sharepoint/best-sharepoint-migration-tools/ for further details.
Note: I am affiliated with one of the vendors from the above list.

Agree, this should be in the OOTB product. There is a 3rd party tool named SLIM Companion that provides this functionality.
