I meant to include, just as many in the referenced thread have, I'm not upset that edit mode is the default, but definitely that there's no option to select what the default is at the library settings. That's what should be proposed here - adding an option to set the default mode when opening a document.

As a lot of discussion shown in the thread referenced below points out a number of reasons I'd like to highlight one fairly large issue that arises from this global change - content approval. If you have any workflows triggering on item change this is even more of an issue. It's often you have a library where a large group has permission to edit if they want to propose changes to existing documents. With auto-edit-mode this puts every document in a pending state each time a user clicks on it with intent just to view. Plus, as also mentioned just clicking on the file now creates a new version and shows that users as the last modified and when even if they didn't change anything. This is highly annoying when it comes to document organization and integrity.
Here's the referenced thread: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_sharepoint-mso_winother-mso_o365b/word-online-documents-opening-in-edit-mode/be77b404-96c7-4f7c-8420-9ab36f298c99Jer Harwood supported this idea ·

It's a great option to have but would be best as an OPTION. I use it often in some libraries, but I don't want it as an option when I'm using custom content types on a list that I want to be the ONLY options.

At least make it an option to have as a default... Even just from a logical perspective this makes more sense both from the "Copy Link" and "Share" menu. If a user has read access only they can't utilize the Share menu but if it was for people with existing access there shouldn't be a problem. Those with permissions to update permissions would have options to choose other sharing types but yes, yes, yes... please allow setting the defaults so it doesn't default to mucking up the permissions on the site...

At the very least don't put the whole group alias as the SCA. The old way of whoever created the site is still better than that!
