So we ended up using a custom app to remove the gear icon from the site but now when a visitor with limited permissions go to each wiki page they can again see the gear icon and see site contents and shared with. Please Microsoft, how is anyone supposed to use a modern SharePoint to provide their clients with information with them being able to see the backend and other users of the site. This is appalling that there isn't a straight forward permission to limit this sort of thing. Atlassian will be eating your lunch very soon due to not dealing with these sorts of things quickly.

Our objective is to share a modern communication site externally to our clients to be used as a self help solution. There is currently no way to provide access to our external users without also giving them access to the gear in the top right corner of the site. We need external users to have access to site pages, wiki pages, libraries, lists, pages but not have access to site settings, site permissions, site usage, site contents and most importantly "Sharing with". We have multiple external clients who are competitors so they should not be able to see who else has access to things on the site, specifically wiki pages, documents, etc.

Hi Microsoft team, are there any updates on this at all?

It looks like people are confusing modern pages with wiki pages in modern SharePoint. This request is for a TOC to be added to a WIKI page, very different than a modern site page. Please Microsoft, if you are listening, this is an absolute requirement for wiki pages to be of any use to users. Can you please provide an update? The status has been "Working On It" for almost 2 years now.

We know wikis are critical to sharing knowledge within your organization! We’ve been slowly building capabilities to share information more easily with our focus on modern pages and web parts. And with that work, we’ve been adding some of the capabilities we hear you want when people refer to wikis (easily add links to other pages or content, add metadata to each page to help people find and categorize it, roll-up content based on that metadata to show groupings of like content, etc.) But we know this isn’t all that’s required to have a great wiki. Many people also want wiki linking syntax e.g. [[]], we don’t yet support that, but we do support ctrl/command + K from the text web part to search and find pages on your site. We’ll be working on adding wiki syntax shortly. We know you also need easy roll-up pages, maybe an index page,…

It would also be really nice to have some advanced style features similar to Site Pages and Word documents. Currently the wiki library styles and formatting options are very limited.
