We have started modernizing the search results page a few years ago. It is available on every site under this URL: /_layouts/15/search.aspx/siteall?q=myquery. Also the new search box placed in the suite header has started rolling out to modern experiences, and will be available broadly by end of June. We will be making it available to classic sites later this year as well. Some customers redirect their classic search boxes to the modern results page already.
The modern search experience is a part of the overall Microsoft Search experiences. See more details in this post: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Microsoft-Search-Blog/Welcome-to-Microsoft-Search-intelligent-search-for-the-modern/ba-p/531156. We will be bringing additional improvements to it later in 2019, and early 2020 as well including custom refiners, verticals, result types with modern display templates, as well as custom pages that can use modern web parts.

Going in to an implementation for an organization of 35K Users. They want a high degree of role based content on their intranet. I was planning to use the Audiences to do this. The once a week compilation schedule will completely ruin my plans. There is no way that once a week is going to cut it. Very disappointing.

I would love to see this expanded to make it easy to request a full crawl as well, instead of having to put a ticket in, waiting for the response, going through all the motions with MS Support to convince them you need a crawl, because of the 10 or 20 times i have done this, simply telling them that I have created new managed properties and mapped crawled properties to does not seem to be enough without answering a bunch of questions and providing a screenshots. Ugh! Thanks for posting this Pieter! I hope it gets some traction.

This need to be done. Currently I have several clients that are hiding the SharePoint page to prevent people from creating news stories, defeating the purpose of the page.
