Users at my company have been asking for this since SharePoint 2007. I know you can do overlays, but that is much too time-consuming and complex to set up at the scale at which we would like to make this available.
(PS - I raised this to the SharePoint development team during Ignite and heard that several other people want this but have been using JavaScript and other workarounds to make it happen. It will make a lot of people happy!)Matt

Rachel Davis nailed this: I'm sure Microsoft employees always know how to use all the details of Microsoft's products, right? (I'd be shocked if that's true.) Now imagine working in a company where everyone was a liberal arts major. Getting people to understand access controls is really hard. I want the default to simply facilitate sharing within the status quo of our permissions framework.
