@Mitch, this was exactly my use-case as well: To provide directions & context alongside the List items so it makes more sense to end-users.

The only way I found to get around it is to embed the List, which is OK for proof-of-concept studies but not in production. Embedding a List is very awkward and presents users with buttons & options that are not useful to them, and may distract or confuse them.

The Export to Excel button creates an .iqy file OK, but we can't get the .iqy file to run the query in Excel; it fails immediately. Doing it manually fails as well, so I'm thinking the button itself is not to blame but the way Excel is doing the query (and/or some security setting somewhere perhaps).

We've worked through with Microsoft on another forum but it seems the whole process is still "legacy" and should be "modern". We could not get it to work, which is a shame because it's such a useful feature. I've had to recreate the process in Flow but it's per-List / per-Library and not as flexible.

We have moved 2 "classic" blog sites to the new Communication Sites using News Posts -- and we can't go live with one of them because there is no way to disable the Comments box.

We use Comments in other modern sites, however, so we don't want to turn them off globally.

I also tried adjusting Permissions but if I block the Comments field, it blocks some content from loading also.

I'd like to see this as an option included in the View settings so the experience can be customized to meet the expectations of the target audience.
