Quick update on this suggestion. We are still working on this with MS Teams. We don’t have an ETA to share still.

Today you can add metadata to modern pages and news. Also the news web part currently supports filtering news by metadata, as long as the source of the content is the current site.
We’re working to enable this same filtering across sites right now.

Been working on it since February. Any update? Functionality exists with Events. Should work the same way. Should be able to categorize news posts like General, Human Resources, Business Operations, etc. And be able to filter the news widget based on which page you are adding. All news can flow to home page. Only HR news in the News widget on the HR page. Please make this happen. We are going to have to roll out with a work around (like separate Yammer feed for HR) if this is not implemented.
Can you update us?

Noticed this exact functionality is possible within the events webpart. Can categorize events and filter on those categories. Need that type of functionality on news feed.

This is really bad! New to Teams and this is the first glaring issue I encountered. Shocked it has been an issue for well over a year with no resolution. Unacceptable.
