As a workaround on some of our problem sites, I had to set the Access Request Settings to this: un-check Allow members to share the site and individual files, then set the Owners group from Full Control to Design permissions. This forces the only link available to "People with existing access".

Kevin Gunning, can you please link to a source that shows you are able to still add "Version" to the document template in the modern doc library from the “Quick Parts” “Document Property” selections? I am unable to find that selection in my templates on my modern libraries at this time (considering you can switch between classic and modern on the fly and in the library settings, I'm not sure this is actually a factor). As a workaround I have used an OOTB Document Property "Publish Date" to add as a Quick Part to a "document to track if a document is the latest in comparison to a duplicate saved elsewhere.

I am in process of migrating a document management library to SharePoint Online, this was one of the deciding factors to use SharePoint to track document versions from within the document in case the documents are emailed or saved elsewhere to help users determine if they have the most current document. Hopefully this will get some traction and make a comeback.

Thanks Kam.amin! We can only hope this get heard. In the mean time, I had to go into the "View Log Reports" from the site collection recycle bin, export the "Deletion" report, then sort by from Excel to narrow down the document that got deleted. Hope this helps. Still isn't helpful for our user community in the least bit though as they do not have access to the audit logs.

To be specific, the Deleted By column needs to be in the subsite recycle bin, where currently it is not. An administrator has to go into the site collection to help users find who deleted what.

Edit: Step 6 set this to "Start this workflow to approve publishing a major version of an item. "
