The most frustrating part of this is Microsoft's response seems to have completely missed the point Dan was making and instead of taking ownership of the actual issue, they've sugar coated a different solution to a different problem (renaming site URLs) instead of addressing the tenant renaming issue.

I read on a tweet somewhere that this was one of the topics being discussed at Ignite this year (nov 2019). I'll try dig it out, I have been waiting for this for YEARS!
We're about to enter Q2 for 2019 and still no update on the original MSFT post. I do wonder if this thread is even being monitored by a MSFT representative. Your customers feel like this has been swept under the rug.
