While we’ve added the ability to crop images and display specific aspect ratios (by clicking on the image); however, the column size (1/3, 1/2, 2/3, etc.) the page author has selected decides the size of all the web parts in that section.
We are looking at ways to make this more flexible for images, without making it odd for other web parts, but haven’t finalized our approach yet.
Today an image occupies the width of the container it’s in (e.g. 1/3 column). Assuming you could make your image smaller than the column width, what level of alignment would you want? Is left, right, center sufficient, or are you wanting vertical alignment in the negative space around the image (e.g. top, middle, bottom)? What would you expect happens to the space on different break points (e.g. iPad, mobile phone, etc.) Does it go away, or is it somehow retained? Thanks.

Quick update on this suggestion. We are still working on this with MS Teams. We don’t have an ETA to share still.

Thanks for the suggestion. While this can accomplished via PnP Powershell today, we understand the desire to have a way to do it in the UX. We’ll add it to our backlog.Jason commented
If you would like to take market share from Atlassian's Confluence product, this feature would go a long way in giving you that opportunity.
We agree this is important and simplifies authoring. We’ll be adding this to modern pages.Jason commented
We are currently considering a migration from Confluence to SharePoint and using SharePoint Wiki libraries. I'm afraid this could be a deal breaker since users really enjoy being able to quickly add screenshots when they are creating process documentation within Confluence. Adding this functionality in SharePoint would really help make that decision much easier.
