Since many people who would like to use SharePoint also use Mac computers, it's very strange that the export to Excel functionality is not supported in this context.
Since Macs have been around for a long time, and spreadsheets have been around for a long time, the desire to combine the two is pretty obvious. This is why Microsoft makes products that run on Macs.
Thus, I must concluded that the apparent lack of support in this instance is a very intentional nose-thumbing to Mac users.
This is a valid basis on which to discourage other organizations from moving into the SharePoint ecosystem--it is NOT FRIENDLY.
(Plus, it's not even a visually attractive ecosystem.)
