We have started modernizing the search results page a few years ago. It is available on every site under this URL: /_layouts/15/search.aspx/siteall?q=myquery. Also the new search box placed in the suite header has started rolling out to modern experiences, and will be available broadly by end of June. We will be making it available to classic sites later this year as well. Some customers redirect their classic search boxes to the modern results page already.

The modern search experience is a part of the overall Microsoft Search experiences. See more details in this post: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Microsoft-Search-Blog/Welcome-to-Microsoft-Search-intelligent-search-for-the-modern/ba-p/531156. We will be bringing additional improvements to it later in 2019, and early 2020 as well including custom refiners, verticals, result types with modern display templates, as well as custom pages that can use modern web parts.

I really appreciate the look and feel of Modern sites especially the communications site. However what I don't like is having to explain to my colleagues and site users that I can only give them half the functionality and customisation they used to have in previous versions of SharePoint.

Every other modern CMS is highly customisable both in its appearance and functionality I don't understand how the SharePoint Server 2019 modern site experience has come to market with so much missing out of it?

In modern pages, we open links within SharePoint in the same tab by default, and external links in a new tab. In the text web part, users can specify to open links in a new tab, but that isn’t the default behavior. Similarly, for navigation links, they follow the same rule (within SharePoint, same tab, external to SharePoint in a new tab). This is true of the modern web parts that support linking as well (hero, quick links, images, etc.) This is the pattern we’ve adopted for consistency.

After reviewing other areas of modern sites, like the site pages library, document libraries, lists, site contents, etc. we did find some different opening behaviors which we’ll review and resolve.

Can you help us understand if this pattern isn’t meeting your expectation, if we have some inconsistencies within modern pages we’ve missed, or if it’s the other areas of modern sites where…
