Hi Alan, First published date is editable programmatically and the published date in the post gets updated every time you update the content.
News scheduling was rolled out as Targeted release in July 2020, if your tenant has set to receive targeted release then you should have this feature already. see here for more details : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/schedule-a-sharepoint-page-or-news-post-to-go-live-at-a-specific-time-4b81873c-9bbc-4307-b7ea-7b6662ff1af2

    Hi Anonymous,
What you are looking for is already there, as soon as you update the news post it gets the new publishing date. Publishing date is visible on the news post but you can decide if you want to display it or not.
See here for more details: https://babakdanyal.com/show-hide-enable-disable-or-update-the-news-publishing-date-in-sharepoint/

I have tried to replicate the January1,1 issue but I wasn't able to get it. If you can share the steps, I may be able to help you out with that. Sometimes it takes time to reflect the date change so it could be that.

If you don't want to use or have access to powershell you can hide the out of the box date and use the Text above title property to update your dates every time you update the content but I won't recommend it as it is already happening out of the box.

We can use power shell to update the original published date field. Have a look at this blog post:

It is very crucial to provide atleast the updating of published date programmatically.

Also the Author on the news banner, we are unable to update it via script as updating the AuthorByLine_ column doesn't update the author in the UI

It was working in Standard release and for testing I switched my tenant to Targeted Release and it has stopped working.

When you drag from outlook to SPO in browser it shows a box and a email icon but when you release nothing happens.

In standard release it use to show the message "Drag your items here" or something similar but it is gone in the Targeted Release (I am hopping it is a bug in the targeted release that needs to be fixed).
