    one way around this is to use the fact that SP opens external links in new tabs to your benefit by taking the internal URL, plugging it into tinyurl or similar, and getting an external URL for it, then use that external URL for the button and voila!

    I found a pretty quick way to deal with this, just take the internal URL you are trying to have opened in a new tab and drop it into tinyurl, it will generate an external URL which can then be used for your button and opened in a new tab when clicked.
