In modern pages, we open links within SharePoint in the same tab by default, and external links in a new tab. In the text web part, users can specify to open links in a new tab, but that isn’t the default behavior. Similarly, for navigation links, they follow the same rule (within SharePoint, same tab, external to SharePoint in a new tab). This is true of the modern web parts that support linking as well (hero, quick links, images, etc.) This is the pattern we’ve adopted for consistency.
After reviewing other areas of modern sites, like the site pages library, document libraries, lists, site contents, etc. we did find some different opening behaviors which we’ll review and resolve.
Can you help us understand if this pattern isn’t meeting your expectation, if we have some inconsistencies within modern pages we’ve missed, or if it’s the other areas of modern sites where…

Thank you for everyone’s feedback around the use of white space on modern pages. We are continually looking for ways to refine our designs and the use of white space is an important part of this. While the custom control of sections or the custom control of columns is not likely to happen, there could be other optimizations we will be thinking about in the future. Thank you.

The only work around for reducing the white space is to go back to Classic settings which defeats the whole purpose of introducing the Modern settings. Would like to have the modern view but with the spacing of classic. It's been over 3 years since this idea was introduced, when will we see some movement on this?

Thanks for the feedback. It would helpful to know the specific scenarios where users aren’t able to get to the content they need.
We’ve observed that with sites shared publicly, or sites attached to a public Office365 Group, it’s not very meaningful to see every SharePoint Site a user can access, because there could be a huge number, most of which the user isn’t interested in.
Is the focus here more like “show me all sites I’m a member of”?
There is one comment that says search isn’t working, please open a support ticket for that.

If SharePoint can build a central hub like the MS Planner Hub, that would be ideal. Just like Planner shows you a list of all plans you have access to and can favorite, having SharePoint mimic that would be great.

Thanks for the suggestion. While this can accomplished via PnP Powershell today, we understand the desire to have a way to do it in the UX. We’ll add it to our backlog.

Thank you for the feedback! We are not planning on adding support recurring events at this time but we will keep it in mind in the future when we look at improving the overall event story on SharePoint.

We aren’t currently working on adding recurring events support to the Events web part. As a number of commentors have suggested, Group calendars do a great job with recurring events and are a great way to show them on your modern pages.

Since we don't have the option to show a FULL CALENDAR view on our home page, we are forced to use the Events wp. Entering individual entries for recurring events is tedious and inefficient. Please support recurring events or give us a FULL CALENDAR view wp which does support recurring events.

Agreed, it would be great to have the same level of web part editing that we had with the classic version be incorporated into the Modern SPO.

We’ll be updating the Image gallery web part on modern pages shortly to display images dynamically from a document library, if you have that library backed by a CDN.

Navigating within modern SharePoint still results in an excessive amount of tabs being opened and confuses the users. I've had many users asking if we can turn this function off. Is there going to be any resolution on this anytime soon? It's almost been 2 years since the last status update.
